YEAR IN REVIEW: The band complete their long-awaited sixth effort, Neighborhoods, which receives a mixed response and stalls commercially. The band partner with Honda for their domestic tour and cancel overseas dates.

 

1/2/2011: A new issue of Kerrang! features an interview with Tom: the album was in “full force” starting in Sepetmber 2010, with “10 to 12” songs now in development. For the first time, he shares the track titles “Ghost on the Dance Floor” and “Snake Charmer”

1/15/2011: The latest Kerrang! includes an interview with the band in the studio, taken on 11/18/2010.

1/25/2011: 

  • Mark shares the lyrics for an upcoming song, “Fighting the Gravity”, on Bompa.

  • Angels & Airwaves begin touring in Berlin.

2/4/2011: Angels & Airwaves conclude the LOVE tour in London.

2/16/2011: Travis to MTV News: "You know, it's hard, [...] when we're in a room together for more than a month or two, it's gonna really happen." At this point -- two years after reuniting -- the band only have five songs complete, and the album is now set to be finished by June-July 2011.

3/11/2011: Mark posts to Facebook that he is “working with Tom” in the studio.

3/15/2011: Travis Barker’s solo album, Give the Drummer Some, is released.

3/17/2011: A fan reports, via a question-answer session at a taping for A Different Spin, that Blink are three songs from finishing an album, and that he got “a lot done” with Tom that previous Thursday (3/10).

5/17/2011: Band (as a whole!!) are in the studio. Mark posts three updates, revealing it was a "12-hour studio day”: “let’s go where we’ve never been,” he tweets.

5/18/2011: Band (as a whole!!) are in the studio. Mark posts three updates and Travis posts one; Mark notes that "some of the best stuff has been written in the past two days, if I do say so ourselves," and that they're "taking it all back to what it is: three guys playing music in a room."

5/19/2011: Travis says a single is set for "July/August"

5/23/2011: The band announces they'll headline the 10th Annual Honda Civic Tour alongside My Chemical Romance, Manchester Orchestra, Rancid and Matt & Kim on select dates.

6/23/2011: 

  • Mark, to Billboard, states there are four single contenders and Travis is still tracking drums.

  • Mark posts a very lengthy Tumblr update on his life, his TV show, and the album: “some of the best songs for the record have been written in the past month. songs with energy and angst, and hooks and great melodies. the original absence of there songs is the reason why we had to cancel the UK/European dates.”

6/27/2011:

  • Tom claims the album title is conceived on this day.

  • Mark reveals all bass/lead vocals, most guitars are completed.

6/30/2011: Mark confirms they now have a title, release date for the album, release date for the single, and video shooting date.

7/1/2011: According to Mark, two songs — "Up All Night" and “Ghost on the Dance Floor”, it is later revealed — are being sent to various mixers.

7/6/2011: Mark listens to the first mix for “Up All Night”: “stoked beyond words to be listening to new music from our band. [...]i hope that when it does you all are as excited as i am sitting here by myself in the middle of the night, cross-leeged [sic] on the floor of a hotel room, with headphones on, listening to this song over and over. thank you for supporting our band. blink-182 life, for life.”

7/13/2011: The band announces "Up All Night" will premiere that Friday (7/15) on KROQ at 10:30am EST, later rolling out on their official website.

7/14/2011: The first new Blink music in six years, "Up All Night", premieres on KROQ. Stryker, the DJ who first plays the song, excitedly uploads a video of its first spin.

7/16/2011: Mark is interviewed on Kevin and Bean and announces the album title, Neighborhoods, and release date.

8/4/2011: Mark shares a Google+ link, informing users to "command the A". Doing so leads to a special website that reveals an early unmastered version of "Heart's All Gone", plus its lyrics.
