YEAR IN REVIEW: As sales for Dude Ranch skyrocket, the band find themselves at a new level of success. In the midst of this, they dismiss original drummer Scott Raynor after his alcoholism begins affecting the band, and they add Aquabats percussionist Travis Barker.

  • In TFBYM, Anne Hoppus writes that the band went on a short mini-tour along the West Coast. During this tour, Scott suffered a "tragic loss" (the details of which have never been disclosed) and flies home. For the first time, Blink gets a fill-in drummer: Travis Barker from the Aquabats. Travis learns the drum tracks for the 20-song setlist in only 45 minutes before the first show and performed them flawlessly thereafter. I’m not sure where this is in the chronology here, but I surmise it’s very likely following the “Josie” shoot. A 2017 post on Reddit purports that the 2/25/1998 show in Nebraska was Travis's first show as drummer of blink, and that could very well be correct, too.

Found two reviews (from Larry Parr and Matt Pless) who attended this show and recall it : “I was at this show. It was a free concert at Pier Six. Tom and Mark sat a table before the show, signed autographs and joked with all the fans. I remember thinking why wasn’t Scott there, since I didn’t know he was out of the band. I was thirteen and this show was so great.”

“I remember driving around doing nothing that day with my buds when we heard this free Blink show advertised on the radio and we immediately rolled down to Pier Six and had a blast. I found some kids wallet in the pit and stole 80 bucks out of it and then tossed it back in the crowd. If that person is on this comment thread, I am deeply sorry. I was just stupid back then and just graduated high school a month before. Man, what a start to a dope summer. Miss those days. Also, recall meeting Tom and Mark at this show, had them sign the back of my prom picture,. They kept asking for my girlfriend’s number and saying they wanted to bang her. Man oh man, if cell phones were around back then, coulda cancelled the whole band!”
