1999

YEAR IN REVIEW: Blink record and release their third album, Enema of the State, becoming superstars in the process as it sells millions. They tour heavily and make dozens of TV appearances.

 

1/1999-3/1999 (undated): 

  • Enema of the State is recorded at Signature Sound and Studio West in San Diego, Mad Hatter Studios and The Bomb Factory in Los Angeles, Conway Recording Studios in Hollywood, and Big Fish Studios in Encinitas, California.

  • "When it was done, we were so stoked. It was like a masterpiece for our band. We knew this was going to be the best thing we ever did," said Tom in TFBYM.

  • Here’s a rare, undated video of the band in the studio with fans whilst recording the album.

1/26/1999: According to Rob Perelman, the band was specifically working at Studio West in Rancho Bernardo on this date.

2/14/1999: Mark watches Can't Hardly Wait, a teen film that featured "Dammit" on the soundtrack. Inspired by the film, he writes "Going Away to College" as a last-minute addition to the album. Travis has to return to LA to record his drum tracks for it.

3/9/1999: The group's third album, Enema of the State, is announced, with a preliminary release date of June 15.

3/12/1999: Photo shoot for Enema of the State. At this point, the album's titled Turn Your Head and Cough.

3/14/1999: The documentary Release (documentary by Brant Sersen) premieres at the 6th Annual New York Underground Film Festival. Clips from the interview with Mark and Tom (from their show at Cheers in Miami dated 21st March 1996) are included in the documentary. Documentary Release Poster

4/5/1999: Kung-Fu Records sues Cargo/MCA in a dispute involving Buddha. The $1.1 million dollar suit alleges that MCA/Cargo impeded the label's progress in releasing Buddha.

  • Travis later writes about this performance in his memoir, Can I Say: “I asked Tom and Mark if we could play a free show for the grand opening of FSAS, and they said, fuck yeah, we’ll come do it. […] At the time, Blink-182 were number one on TRL. The show ended up shutting down Van Buren Boulevard, one of the main streets in Riverside. All without a permit or a business license. It was insane.”
